Frequently asked questions

Questions contractors and design consultants often ask about tile adhesive, grout and floor sound insulation.

What are tile adhesive, thin-set and grout, and how do they differ?

Tile adhesive (also called thin-set or tile mortar) is the layer that bonds tile or stone to floors and walls. Grout fills the joints between tiles after they are set. LATICRETE supplies both: tile adhesives (254 Platinum, 316, 323, 325, 335, 335R, LATAPOXY 300 and 310) and grouts (1600, SPECTRALOCK, Seamless Grout).

Are acoustic rubber underlay, floor soundproofing mats and impact sound underlayment the same thing?

They all refer to a layer placed under the floor finish or under the screed to reduce impact noise. GenieMat FF03NP and FF05NP are made from recycled rubber (acoustic rubber underlay), and EnkaSonic E10 from heat-bonded polyamide 6 filaments. This kind of mat deals with footsteps and objects dropped on the floor, not with voices or TV travelling through the air.

What is the difference between C1 and C2 tile adhesive?

Under ISO 13007, C1 is a normal adhesive (minimum tensile adhesion 0.5 N/mm²) and C2 is an improved adhesive (minimum 1.0 N/mm²). C2 suits large-format porcelain, exterior use and wet areas.

How much area does one bag of tile adhesive cover?

It depends on the product and trowel. A 25 kg bag of 254 Platinum, 316, 323, 325 or 335 covers about 6.5 to 7.5 m² with a 6 × 6 mm square-notch trowel (per datasheet). Each product page lists its own coverage.

How do cement and epoxy grouts differ?

Cement grouts (such as 1600 Unsanded Grout) are mixed with water. Epoxy grouts (such as SPECTRALOCK PRO Premium and Seamless Grout) are multi-component kits with better stain and chemical resistance per their datasheets, suited to wet areas, pools and joints that must keep their colour.

What is 1776 Grout Enhancer for?

1776 Grout Enhancer replaces the mixing water in 1500 Tri-Poly Fortified Sanded Grout and 1600 Tri-Poly Fortified Unsanded Grout. It gives a denser, colour-fast joint and inhibits stain-causing mold and mildew with MICROBAN.

Which adhesive suits stain-prone or moisture-sensitive marble?

LATICRETE's datasheets recommend LATAPOXY 300 Adhesive for green and moisture-sensitive marble, and 335 Premium Flexible Adhesive (White) for light-coloured marble or stone.

What do Lw and IIC mean for sound insulation?

Lw (per ISO 717-2) expresses the reduction in impact sound pressure level in dB. IIC (Impact Insulation Class) rates the impact insulation of a whole floor assembly; higher is better. Each product's datasheet states its test conditions.

Where does the underlayment go in the floor build-up?

It depends on the product. GenieMat FF03NP goes directly under floor finishes or under screed, GenieMat FF05NP goes under screed or gypsum concrete, and EnkaSonic E10 goes beneath tile, stone, wood, vinyl or carpet.
