Tile adhesive bags and datasheets carry codes such as C1, C2TE or C2TE S1. They come from the ISO 13007 (and EN 12004) classification. Reading them correctly helps you match the adhesive to the tile and the place of installation.
What each code means
- C: cementitious adhesive.
- 1 or 2: 1 is a normal adhesive with a minimum tensile adhesion of 0.5 N/mm²; 2 is an improved adhesive with a minimum of 1.0 N/mm².
- F: fast setting.
- T: reduced slip, so tiles resist sliding down when fixed to walls.
- E: extended open time, at least 30 minutes.
- S1, S2: deformable (S1) and highly deformable (S2) adhesives that tolerate small movements of the substrate.
Examples from the datasheets
| Product | Classification per datasheet | Test standard |
|---|---|---|
| 316 Cementitious Adhesive | C1E | BS EN 12004 |
| 323 Tile Adhesive | C2T | BS EN 12004 |
| 325 Cementitious Adhesive | C2TE | BS EN 12004 |
| 335 Premium Flexible Adhesive | C2TE S1 | MS ISO 13007 |
| 254 Platinum | C2TE S2P1 | ISO 13007 |
Choosing the right one
Large-format porcelain, exterior use or wet areas usually call for a C2 adhesive. Where the substrate may move, consider an S1 or S2 adhesive. Note that 316 (C1) must be fortified with Mortar Admix for exterior use, porcelain, mosaic, glass and stone tiles and heavy-traffic areas.
Always check the latest datasheet and your site conditions. See the Tile adhesives group or send a request for advice.
